It does kick in to resistance mode for the 10-15 days per year it gets close to freezing outside, but the rest of the time it's only running as a heat pump I suspect that with the innovation happening in the heat pump space now, we'll eventually have traditional format HPWHs that - like the SanC02 -don't need any resistance backup heating
